Two domains, one site, no canonical
Reported
SEO · Configuration · Audit
An organization competing against itself for its own name, byte for byte.
Two hostnames, both serving an identical document, neither declaring a canonical, and a sitemap on one that lists the URLs of the other. Every inbound link and every citation is being split between two addresses that are the same page.
It is worth naming how this happens, because it is almost never carelessness. It happens when a short domain is bought after launch and pointed at the same deployment as a convenience, by someone who reasonably assumed that two ways in was better than one.
Two ways in is better than one. Two canonical identities are not. Point the second at the first with a redirect, or declare one authoritative, and the problem disappears in an afternoon. Left alone, it quietly caps how visible the organization can ever become.
