I have spent fifteen-plus years in design and marketing, most of it somewhere between the strategy conversation and the thing actually shipping. That is an unfashionable place to stand. It is also where almost every interesting problem turns out to live.
People occasionally read the range — brand, software, positioning, ministry — as a lack of focus. It is not. The common thread is building useful things out of ideas, and the reason the strategy work is any good is that I have to build the thing afterwards. It is difficult to sell a plan you know you will personally have to implement.
Most of what I work on is unglamorous infrastructure for businesses that are already working. A catalog that finally supports four sales channels. A storefront that leaves a platform without losing its rankings. A generator company that needed to be believed rather than admired. The work that photographs well and the work that matters are rarely the same work.
I own a design company in rural Texas, head design and creative for a growth agency and its Texas branch, and preach most weeks at a church near where I live. Husband and father before any of that, and not as a line on an about page — it is the actual constraint the rest of it is arranged around.
