You Are Not Enough (And That’s the Whole Point)

2025-04-22Kiefer Likens

Burn the hoodie. Keep the cross.

Let’s start with a quick reality check: You are not enough. I know, I know. That’s not how these blog posts are supposed to start. I’m supposed to call you a warrior, a world-changer, a miracle in motion. I’m supposed to pat your back while you sip your $7 artisan latte and scroll past the pain with pastel-scripted affirmations that say things like:

"You are enough."

Well, here’s a biblical grenade for your cotton-candy theology: You are not.

And that’s actually the best news you’ll hear all day.

Because if you were enough, you wouldn’t need Jesus. And the last time I checked, the entire gospel rests on the reality that you are absolutely, completely, eternally not enough.

So let’s talk about it. Let’s dismantle the “You Are Enough” movement—the books, the hoodies, the Instagram reels, and the motivational sludge that has slithered into the Church. Let’s tear it down with grace and truth, and let’s rebuild something eternal in its place: Christ is Enough.

I. The Lie of Self-Sufficiency

At the core of the “You Are Enough” movement is a recycled lie from Genesis 3.

"You will be like God…" (Genesis 3:5)

That’s all this nonsense is: modern-day Eden language, dressed up in soft fonts and flower crowns. It’s a gospel of self-salvation, where your flaws are beautiful, your sin is misunderstood, and your greatest need is self-love.

Spoiler alert: That’s not the gospel. That’s a TED Talk with a few out-of-context Bible verses sprinkled in for good measure.

Jesus didn’t come to pump up your ego. He came to crucify your flesh.

“For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.” (Galatians 6:3)

You are not enough. You are not strong enough, holy enough, wise enough, or pure enough. You are a sinner in desperate need of a Savior.

And that’s not self-loathing. That’s called reality.

II. Jesus Didn’t Die So You Could Feel Better About Yourself

Let’s just nuke this idea right now: Jesus didn’t suffer Roman execution so you could slap “I am enough” on a water bottle.

He didn’t rise from the grave so your Etsy store could sell coasters with Jeremiah 29:11 misquoted on them.

The cross wasn’t a motivational speech.

It was a bloody, violent, substitutionary atonement for your rebellion against a holy God.

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Still sinners. Not worthy. Not enough. Not cute little divine butterflies.

Sinners.

Jesus didn’t come to tell you you’re amazing. He came to tell you you’re dead.

“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked…” (Ephesians 2:1)

There is no version of the gospel where you are the hero. No version where the cross is just a divine pep rally.

III. The Self-Esteem Gospel Is a Golden Calf

Let’s call it what it is: the gospel of self-esteem is idolatry.

It’s bowing down to the image of yourself, demanding worship and affirmation, and pretending it’s Jesus-approved because you wrote a Bible verse in your planner.

But here’s what God thinks about idols:

“You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3)

When you wear a hoodie that says “You Are Enough,” you’re making a theological statement. You’re saying, “I don’t need saving. I don’t need a cross. I just need to believe in me.”

That’s not Christianity. That’s Instagram paganism.

And for those thinking, “Well, it just means I’m valuable…”

Yes. You are valuable. But your value doesn’t come from being “enough.” It comes from being redeemed.

Your worth isn’t self-generated. It’s Christ-declared.

IV. The Bible Says You’re Not Enough—And That’s the Beauty

Scripture is consistent: You are not enough.

  • "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)
  • "No one is righteous, no, not one." (Romans 3:10)
  • "Apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

Do you feel the freedom in that? The relief? You don’t have to fake it. You don’t have to wear the hoodie or post the reel or chant your mantras.

You can stop pretending to be what you were never meant to be.

You don’t have to be enough.

Christ is.

V. The Merch Movement: When Marketing Replaces Ministry

Let’s have a come-to-Jesus moment (literally):

There is an entire industry built on your insecurity. And it’s weaponized in soft pinks and motivational catchphrases.

“You Are Enough” hoodies.

“You Got This” mugs.

“Trust the Universe” journals (what even is that?).

And Christian influencers are all too happy to cash in. They’ll post devotionals about trusting God, then sell you a t-shirt that tells you to trust yourself.

Friends, that’s not ministry. That’s mammon.

Jesus flipped tables for less (Matthew 21:12).

But here’s where I get excited: what if we flipped the narrative?

What if instead of proclaiming our own sufficiency, we boasted in our weakness?

What if the merch didn’t say, “I Am Enough,” but rather:

"Christ Is Enough."

(And yes, before you ask, I might know a place where you can get that. Check out the /stuff page.)

VI. You Can’t Cling to the Cross and Your Ego at the Same Time

Listen. The cross is not a co-op. It’s not a team effort. It doesn’t need your help. And it certainly doesn’t leave room for your ego.

You can’t cling to the finished work of Christ with one hand and prop up your brand of self-affirmation with the other.

You have to choose:

Die to self, or live in delusion.

“Whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:38)

That cross isn’t a fashion accessory. It’s a death sentence for your flesh.

So go ahead and burn the hoodie.

Not because you’re worthless.

But because your worth doesn’t come from you.

It comes from Christ—the One who was more than enough when you were still dead in your sin.

VII. Final Word: Grace Is Better Than Self-Esteem

You want real freedom?

Stop chanting that you’re enough.

Start clinging to the fact that Jesus is.

You don’t need mantras. You need mercy.

You don’t need vibes. You need victory.

You don’t need affirmation. You need atonement.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

So embrace your weakness.

Admit you’re not enough.

And worship the One who is.

Christ is Enough.

(And if you need a wearable reminder of that—you already know where to look. /stuff.)
